Umbul & Jamiel’s Nikah Ceremony at Masjid Al-Hayy, Sanford

Umbul and Jamiel’s nikah ceremony (also spelled nikkah) at Masjid Al-Hayy in Sanford was soft, joyful and full of meaning. Dressed in ivory, silver and white, the couple were married under a wall of white and peach roses, shared the mirror ceremony beneath one dupatta, and finished with portraits among the mosque’s white Moorish arches, just north of Orlando.

Bridal Portraits at Masjid Al-Hayy

Umbul wore an ivory and silver embroidered lehenga with a scalloped dupatta, a silver maang tikka and fresh wrist flowers of peach roses and baby’s breath. The bright white walls of the mosque and the palm-lined gardens made a soft, luminous backdrop for her bridal portraits.

The Nikah Ceremony

Inside the prayer hall, the nikah stage was framed by a cascading floral wall. One of the most tender moments came when Jamiel gently lifted Umbul’s veil, both of them smiling before the ceremony began.

After the vows, the couple signed their nikah nama, the marriage contract, with a white feather pen on a gold-trimmed table set with flowers and sweets.

The Mirror Ceremony (Aarsi Mushaf)

Under a sequined dupatta held above them, Umbul and Jamiel looked at each other through a mirror for the first time as a married couple. This South Asian tradition, often called aarsi mushaf, is always full of laughter, and theirs was no exception.

Portraits Around the Mosque

Masjid Al-Hayy is one of the most striking mosques in Central Florida, with white stone, Moorish arches and dramatic carved wooden doors. We used every corner of it, from a playful twirl in front of the dark carved doors to a quiet walk across the checkerboard courtyard.

What Happens at a Nikah Ceremony?

A nikah is the Islamic marriage ceremony. It usually includes an offer and acceptance between the bride and groom (ijab and qubool), an agreed mahr gift to the bride, witnesses and a short sermon or dua, followed by signing the nikah nama. Many South Asian families add traditions such as the mirror ceremony, rukhsati or a walima reception on another day.

Nikah Ceremony Photography FAQs

Can you take photos inside a mosque during a nikah?

Usually yes, but every mosque sets its own guidelines. We confirm the rules with the mosque ahead of time, dress modestly, stay respectful during prayers and the khutbah, and work quietly without flash where requested.

How long does a nikah ceremony take?

The nikah itself is often 20 to 45 minutes. With family photos, the signing, traditions like the mirror ceremony and couple portraits, most couples book two to four hours of coverage for a mosque nikah.

Do you photograph walimas and receptions too?

Yes. Many couples have the nikah at a mosque and a walima or reception on another day, and we cover both, along with mehndi and dholki events, across Central Florida.

Planning a Nikah at a Mosque in Central Florida?

A few tips from photographing nikahs at mosques around Orlando and Tampa:

  • Ask the mosque about photography and video guidelines inside the prayer hall before the day.
  • Plan modest attire for your whole photo and video team, and remind guests too.
  • Leave 30–45 minutes for portraits outside. White mosque walls give beautiful, even light, even on cloudy days.
  • Tell your photographer which traditions you are including, such as the mirror ceremony or veil reveal, so nothing is missed.
