Shobin & Maria’s Malayali Christian Wedding at Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay

Shobin and Maria’s Malayali Christian wedding brought together a Catholic church ceremony, a Kerala-style celebration and a golden-hour sunset over Tampa Bay. Maria got ready at Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay, the couple said their vows at Nativity Catholic Church in Brandon, and the day ended back at the Grand Hyatt with family, music and the sound of chenda drums.

A Quiet Morning at Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay

Maria’s suite had floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the bay, and that soft, even light set the tone for the whole morning. Her gown hung in the window while she took a moment to herself before the rush of the day began.

A Letter Before the Vows

One of our favorite moments came before the ceremony: Maria reading a letter from Shobin. She laughed, teared up and laughed again. These quiet, unposed minutes are often the photos couples treasure most, and the window light made them easy to capture naturally.

Carrying Family Close

Maria’s bouquet of red roses and eucalyptus carried small photo charms of loved ones pinned to the ribbon, a beautiful way to keep family close on the day. Her sheer lace gown, cathedral-length veil and bridal henna brought her Christian and Kerala traditions together in one look.

The Ceremony at Nativity Catholic Church, Brandon

Shobin and Maria exchanged their vows at Nativity Catholic Church in Brandon, surrounded by family. For many Malayali Christian couples, the church ceremony is the heart of the wedding day, followed by a reception that celebrates their Kerala roots.

Golden Hour Portraits in Tampa

After the ceremony we stepped out onto the grounds at Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay, where palm trees and late-afternoon light gave us a warm, editorial setting. Maria’s long veil caught the breeze, and Shobin’s black tuxedo made a striking contrast against her gown.

Sunset Over Tampa Bay

As the sun dropped over the water, we finished with silhouettes on the terrace overlooking Tampa Bay. It is one of our favorite sunset spots in the city for wedding portraits.

An Evening of Kerala Celebration

The reception at Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay brought the energy of a true Malayali celebration, with chenda drums welcoming the couple and family and friends filling the dance floor late into the night.

What Makes a Malayali Christian Wedding Special

A Malayali Christian wedding blends Catholic or Orthodox church traditions with the culture of Kerala. Many couples include the tying of the minnu, a small gold pendant, and the gifting of the manthrakodi saree during the church ceremony, followed by a lively reception with chenda melam drums, family speeches and Kerala dishes. As photographers, we plan around both halves of the day: the quiet, sacred moments in church and the high-energy celebration afterward.

If you are considering the same venue, the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay wedding page has details on its ballrooms and waterfront spaces. It works especially well for couples who want getting-ready suites, portraits and the reception all in one place.

Planning a Malayali Christian Wedding in Tampa?

A few tips from our experience photographing Kerala Christian and Indian weddings across Tampa Bay:

  • Plan travel time between the church and the hotel reception, especially if your ceremony is in Brandon or another nearby city.
  • Save 20–30 minutes for portraits around sunset. Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay’s terrace and lawn are beautiful at golden hour.
  • Get ready in a room with big windows. Natural light makes getting-ready and letter-reading photos glow.
  • Tell your photographer about a chenda melam entrance or other Kerala traditions so they are in position for every moment.
